Bringing Life to “Laowu” – A Watercolour Tale

This week’s class was more challenging compared to our previous watercolour illustration lessons. We were tasked with sketching and painting a more complex-structured noodle house. Everyone referred to the same photo of the noodle house, but we were allowed to outline the background according to our imaginations.

Translated from Chinese, the noodle house is named “Laowu (老 Lǎo 屋 wū) Sichuan Noodle House.” It has a three-tier structure: the first floor is primarily where the business operates, while the second floor has private rooms, with one room featuring a balcony, and the top floor features an open-ended activity space supported by steel bars and a rubble roof.

While outlining the painting with a black ink pen, I accidentally left some stains on the drawing paper. And so, the fallen leaves were born. 😄 I also added two hand-drawn birds on the hanging telephone lines to bring some life to the static building.

“Laowu Sichuan Noodle House” is officially open!

Now I’m running a coffee truck and a noodle house—what’s next?

“Every new creation is a chapter in our artistic journey, where imagination transforms even the simplest lines into something vibrant and alive.”
