I managed to complete this pastel sketch of fragrant lilies, also known as Easter lilies, during my painting lesson this weekend. 🌷🌷😊
Initially, my instructor wanted us to practice life sketching this blossom with watercolor. However, after finishing my pencil sketch and preparing to paint, I noticed that the watercolor paper was damp—definitely not suitable for watercolor! Ironically, it was a new booklet of watercolor paper that I had just bought the day before.
While I was asking my cousin, who paints with me, for some suitable paper and getting ready to start a new sketch, my instructor suggested using pastels instead. Without needing to re-sketch, I managed to complete my pastel painting of the fragrant lilies right then and there.
It’s fascinating how light reflects off a glass bottle. Although I found pastels more manageable than watercolors, I didn’t capture that reflection as well as I wanted. After some fine-tuning from my instructor, the glass bottle looks much more presentable now! 😅
My instructor reminded us today: Don’t limit yourself to one medium. As you learn to paint, be brave and experiment with various color sources, whether it’s watercolor, pastels, gouache, or more, using different techniques. Thanks to my instructor’s guidance, I’m eager to explore these new experiences on my painting journey.
